About our Company…our beginnings
Our company was started in 2003 as a 2 bed Sleep Lab.
We soon realized that the Sleep Lab was critical in
diagnosing Sleep Disorders. We also realized how critical
it was to get the patients acclimated to CPAP for their
Sleep Disorder. We then opened our Medical Equipment
Company to supply and treat those diagnosed with a Sleep
Disorder with the equipment of their choice.
My own father had Sleep Apnea
As a young man I would watch my father go out and play
golf and come home only to fall asleep on the couch
on a Sunday afternoon. We would giggle because he would
hold his breath for what seemed like an eternity…and
finally jump and gasp for air. Little did we realize
at the time that he had the signs of Classic Sleep Apnea.
To make a long story short, that sleep disorder that
he displayed was followed by a stroke about 6 years
prior to him passing away of heart failure. I am convinced
that had he been diagnosed and treated with the same
type of equipment we dispense today, he may have never
had his stroke and may have not died as early as he
did. Hopefully, he’s up there helping me, help
you pick the right equipment for your needs. Don’t
ever give up, just keep trying until you find what works
for you, it is worth it!
Owner diagnosed with Sleep Apnea
It was very apparent to me, Steve Yates (owner of CpapforMedicare.com)
who was diagnosed about the same time we opened our
Sleep Lab, how difficult it could be getting used to
this contraption! I had an HMO and I wanted to see what
the other half was doing since I was also operating
a Sleep Lab and also providing patients with CPAP, BiPAP
and Equipment and Supplies. We would give our patients
their choice of CPAP, their choice of Mask because we
knew it could be difficult for many to get used to wearing
this mask with air blowing at you all night! After all,
this was about patient care right?
Owner gets equipment from HMO Provider or 1 SIZE FITS
ALL?
What I found out that when I went to get my supplies
at the HMO approved medical equipment provider, that
I had no choice. I was given a very basic device and
one of the least expensive masks put out by one of the
major sleep equipment manufacturer’s. I sat in
a room with about 12 other people (so much for medical
privacy, huh?) and basically learned how to turn it
on (press the start button) and told good luck! No choice,
no discussion about what may be available, no discussion
about anything that “I” was concerned with
such as the type of device I was getting (did it have
any features other than it blew air? NO) or the type
of mask I was getting, would it be comfortable for me?
I could not even pay more to get an upgraded mask! I
was miserable to say the least! I struggled for about
6 months before I had a conversation with one of the
representatives from another major manufacturer. He
asked me to try their equipment. I said, you know I
should try out all the equipment we offer. We offer
this equipment to our patients and we should try it
out before we dispense it to anyone. My mother did not
raise any dummies, after 6 months of struggle with what
I had been using the light finally turned on!
ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL…A RUDE AWAKENING!
No it does not. I had a rude awakening if you will!
Little did I know as owner of this Sleep Lab and Medical
Equipment Company that this equipment that I received
from my HMO, equipment that should work for the masses
if you will, was not working for me! First of all, my
level of titration (7) seemed as if I was not getting
enough air, so I tried an auto-titrating device and
was titrated to a level of about 15 on the first auto-titrating
device I tried. I thought my brains were going to be
blown out of my head at a level of 15. I tried another
auto-titrating device made by another manufacturer (you
may call them an auto-set device) and that device was
finally the best device I had used to date! It got my
pressure right at 10.4cm and once I found my mask of
choice, I am now a happy camper! I learned that CPAP
could be a VERY PLEASANT EXPERIENCE…with the right
equipment!
